Dr Boon Kua completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 1994 at the University of Queensland. He was accepted into the advanced training program for general surgery before commencing training in urology in 2002. He spent a year of his urologic training at the renowned Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) hospital in Sydney before returning to Queensland to complete his training. He was awarded his specialist qualification, FRACS (Urology) in 2005.

He received extensive training in open and laparoscopic surgeries in urologic cancers and was routinely performing laparoscopic (keyhole) surgeries for prostate cancers prior to transitioning to DaVinci robotic surgery in 2010. He undertook a certified training course in da Vinci robotic surgery at the Global Robotics Institute in Florida, USA prior to helping set up the da Vinci robotics program at the Wesley hospital in 2010. With over 10 years of experience in da Vinci robotic surgery and almost 1500 cases as primary surgeon and proctor to urologists and trainees, Dr Kua is now one of the most experienced da Vinci robotic surgeons in the country.

Dr Kua teaches Bond University medical students and helped establish Wesley Private Hospital’s urology multi disciplinary team meeting in which he regularly attends to discuss complex urologic oncology cases. He has published multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals from collaboration with his peers.

Dr Kua is highly experienced in treating:

• Prostate Nanoknife (ie. irreversible electroporation)
• Erectile dysfunction and stress urinary incontinence
• Penile prosthesis

Dr Kua’s ultimate goal is for men not to be left with disabilities negatively impacting their quality of life following successful prostate cancer treatment.

Dr Esler is a Urological Surgeon with a special interest in the minimally invasive treatment of urinary tract cancers.  She also has a practice in General Urology

Dr Esler undertook a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Queensland, graduating with honours. She undertook her residency and general surgery training in Brisbane and Central Queensland, before completing her advanced training in urology in New South Wales.

She then completed Fellowship training in Manchester, England, subspecialising in the laparoscopic treatment of urological cancers, particularly kidney and prostate cancer.   She has completed post-fellowship training in robotic surgery.

Dr Esler has a special interest in:

  • Laparoscopic treatment of benign and malignant kidney disease
  • Kidney stone disease
  • General urology

Dr Dunglison underwent 2 years of sub-specialist training in ‘Reconstructive and Prosthetic’ urological surgery at the Institute of Urology, University College London Hospitals under the mentorship of the internationally renowned reconstructive urologist Professor A R Mundy.

In 2002, Dr Dunglison returned to Brisbane, having been appointed Director of Urology at the Royal Brisbane Womens’ Hospital. He has developed the Urology Department to incorporate Robotic, Laparoscopic, Laser, Prosthetic, Reconstructive and Flexible endoscopic surgeries along with Prostate MRI and Brachytherapy. Concurrently Dr Dunglison has continued to develop his own comprehensive Reconstructive + Prosthetic private urological surgery incorporating regular international mentorships and training.

Paul studied medicine at the University of Bristol (UK) and undertook a Research Doctorate prior to completing his specialist training as a Urological Surgeon in 2009. Having married a Margaret River girl, he relocated to WA in 2009 and now lives in Bunbury with his wife and two children. He provides regular outreach clinics in Margaret River and Busselton.

He offers a full male and female urological service including; intervention for prostate, bladder and kidney cancer; kidney stones and prostatic enlargement.

Paul performs vasectomy and minor urological day procedures at Bunbury Day Hospital.

Dr La Bianca studied medicine at the University of Western Australia and graduated in 1991. He achieved his FRACS in Urology in 1999 and completed his training in Vancouver, Canada, at the VGH-UBC Prostate Centre, where he undertook a clinical fellowship in advanced pelvic Uro-Oncology.

Dr La Bianca’s special interests include bladder cancer, cystectomy, bladder reconstruction, Peyronie’s Disease, penile implant surgery, chronic pelvic pain syndromes and prostate cancer. He is an avid Facebooker and technophile. Outside of work, Dr La Bianca enjoys time with his family, listening to his eclectic vinyl record collection, skiing, cycling, travel, slow food and good wine.

Matt Brown assists patients with all manner of Urological problems, but has a subspecialty interest in robotics, prostate cancer, and Academic surgery.  Matt is a graduate of the University of Western Australia, where he completed his medical degree and a PhD in Surgery.  In addition to his training in Urology, Matt has undertaken an internationally competitive fellowship in robotics, and worked as a consultant Urologist/Robotic Surgeon at the world famous Guy’s Hospital in London.

Dr Trenton Barrett (Mira Mar, WA)

Trenton Barrett is a urologist with subspecialty interest in female urology, andrology and male infertility. In 2012 he was the second Western Australian trainee ever to be awarded the prestigious Keith Kirkland travelling fellowship by the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand.

Trenton completed a fellowship in Adelaide followed by a further sub-specialty fellowship in female urology and andrology in the UK through the Leicester General Hospital. Dr Barrett has completed an observership with the female reconstructive unit at University College Hospital London and undergone training in male infertility microsurgery at Cornell in New York City and the PUR clinic in Clermont, Florida.

In addition to private practice, Trenton has a public appointment in General and Spinal Urology at Fiona Stanley Hospital and the King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women. He is active in teaching urology trainees as well as those from other specialties.

Dr Anojan (Ano) Navaratnam is a consultant Urologist who is a fully credentialed urological surgeon with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.  He is a robotic surgeon with interests in urologic oncology and endourology.

After growing up in Brisbane, Dr Navaratnam moved to Sydney to complete medical school where he graduated with honours from the University of New South Wales.  He then returned to Brisbane and completed his formal urological training.

Sub Specialist Interests:

  • Urologic cancer
  • Minimally invasive surgery – robotic surgery, laparoscopy
  • Complex kidney stone disease
  • Surgery for kidney stones – Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), laser surgery
  • Treatment for enlargement of the prostate including Rezum, Urolift, and Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP)
  • Placement of spacing hydrogel (SpaceOAR) prior to radiation treatment for prostate cancer
  • General urology and men’s health


Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgeries:

  • Robotic partial nephrectomy
  • Robotic and laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for kidney cancer (including cancers with extension into the vena cava)
  • Robotic radical prostatectomy with nerve sparing for prostate cancer
  • Robotic radical cystectomy with urinary tract diversion for bladder cancer

He is the only surgeon in Queensland to have experience in the use of robotics for complex surgery including vena cava tumour thrombus surgery and retroperitoneal lymph node dissection.  He is the only surgeon in Queensland to have completed fellowship training in Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) for benign prostate hyperplasia.

Dr Navaratnam is passionate about the health of Queenslanders and ensuring the best outcomes for his patients.  He wants to ensure patients in regional Australia have access to state of the art urological care.  He has previously spent four years of medical and surgical training in regional towns including Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton and Mackay.
