WHAT IS SKIN SURGERY?
Skin surgery involves diagnosing, treating and removing various skin conditions and lesions, which can range from benign growths to complex skin cancers like melanoma that require surgical oncology.
Our number-one goal is always to deliver the most precise, effective treatment using advanced techniques to guarantee the best possible cosmetic and medical outcomes.
We carry out two forms of skin surgery:
Performed as an out-patient in one of our consulting suites.
Requiring hospital admission at Bundaberg Private Day Hospital.
Types of Skin Surgery Procedures.
Skin Lesion Removal
Your General Surgeon will be able to treat and remove a range of skin lesions, including:
- Warts, Moles and Skin Tags: Common skin growths that can be safely and, in most cases, easily removed.
- Seborrheic Keratosis: Benign, waxy skin growths that tend to come with ageing.
- Actinic Keratosis: Pre-cancerous lesions caused by sun exposure, which require treatment to prevent them from progressing to skin cancer.
- Bowen Disease: A form of early skin cancer that appears as a red, scaly patch and requires careful excision.
- Molluscum Contagiosum: Viral skin lesions that are treated to stop them from spreading and causing discomfort.
- Other Skin Conditions and Benign Growths: We manage a range of benign growths and skin irregularities.

Skin Cancer Removal
Skin cancer removal makes up a large part of our surgical services. Our surgeons are highly skilled in treating:
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A common type of skin cancer that needs precise excision.
- Basal Cell Carcinoma: Often resulting from sun exposure, this cancer is treated with surgical removal.
- Melanoma: A potentially dangerous skin cancer. Surgery is required for complete removal and to minimise scarring.

SURGICAL TECHNIQUES
The choice of surgical technique depends on the size, type and location of the lesion. Our options include:
- Shave Excision: Removes the lesion at the skin’s surface and leaves a small scar.
- Simple Scissor Excision: Used for removing skin tags and small lesions with the greatest precision.
- Skin Excision (Full Thickness): Removes deeper lesions with a surrounding margin of healthy tissue.
- Curettage and Electrodesiccation: Used to scrape and destroy small, superficial lesions.
- Laser Excision: A minimally invasive option for highly precise lesion removal, often as part of robotic surgery.
- Cryotherapy: Involves freezing the lesion with liquid nitrogen for removal.
SKIN SURGERY RISKS
While skin surgery is generally safe, like any type of general surgery there is always some level of risk involved with medical procedures. Here are some to consider:
- Minimal risk of infection, bleeding or changes in skin colour.
- Scarring (including keloids) can depend on your skin type.
- Poor wound healing, particularly for patients who have underlying health conditions.
- Rarely, there may be nerve damage or lesion recurrence.
Our surgeons take every precaution to minimise these risks and ensure the best outcomes for all patients.
