Clinical Haematologist

Dr Paola Polistena specialises in haematology oncology, general haematological disorders, and bleeding and clotting diseases.

She has a focused interest in the management of malignant haematological conditions but also has broad experience in the treatment of thrombotic and haemostatic disorders. With over 25 years of haematology experience, her extensive knowledge is complemented by advanced study and practice in both haematology and bone marrow transplants.

Dr Polistena was trained in Italy, where she worked for 17 years. She was a principal investigator in Italy for clinical trials in acute leukemia and lymphoma therapies before moving to Perth with her family. She worked for a year at Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth as a Bone Marrow Transplant Fellow, and then she worked as a Myeloma Fellow at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne the following year. Dr Polistena returned to Perth after working as a consultant for another two years at Latrobe Regional Hospital. She achieved the RACP Fellowship in 2020 and has since been consulting at Bunbury Regional Hospital.

Dr Polistena knows that blood disorders are often complex and prioritises clear communication to allow patients to make informed decisions regarding their own management. She firmly believes that a good relationship with each patient is an integral part of their therapeutic plan.

Dr Wei-Sen Lam (West Perth, WA)

Dr Wei-Sen Lam is a medical oncologist who treats a broad range of cancer with interests in lung cancer and melanoma. Dr Lam graduated from University of Western Australia and completed his specialist training at Fiona Stanley and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Wei-Sen has a keen interest in research and is actively involved in clinical trials. Dr Lam was a successful recipient of the WA Cancer and Palliative Care Network Fellowship and is a principal investigator in several lung cancer trials at Fiona Stanley Hospital. Dr Lam is actively involved in education as the co-chair for WA Clinical Oncology Group (WACOG).

Dr Peter Tan specialises in haematological oncology, and general haematological conditions including obstetric haematology, bleeding and clotting disorders. He consults at Western Haematology & Oncology Clinics and Royal Perth Hospital.

He understands that blood disorders are often complex and prioritises the provision of comprehensive and clear explanations. A new diagnosis may often cause a level of stress and uncertainty for patients and their families, therefore he plans to demystify the process of investigations and therapeutic options.

Dr Tan maintains an interest in the safe use of blood transfusion products and is a member of the RPH Blood Transfusion Committee. He is a member of the RPH Drug and Therapeutics Committee (DTC) that evaluates novel therapies. He supervises physician and haematology specialist trainees and lectures medical students at UWA. He is a haematopathologist at Western Diagnostics Pathology and is the current Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) for Western Haematology & Oncology Clinics.

Dr Maan Alwan is a dual qualified clinical and laboratory haematologist. He completed his specialist training at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney.

Dr Alwan has clinical interest in both malignant and non-malignant haematology. With a special interest in;

Dr Alice Livings is a Clinical and Laboratory Haematologist who has commenced Private Practice in Clinical Haematology on the Sunshine Coast in 2021.

Alice grew up in Brisbane and completed a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Chemistry at the University of Queensland, before making the move to Sydney. There she completed her medical degree with First Class Honours at the University of Sydney. After medical school she worked in a number of hospitals around the greater Sydney area before undertaking her advanced training in Haematology at Royal North Shore and Liverpool Hospitals, obtaining Fellowship of both the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists Australasia. Following completion of her training, she was the Pitney Fellow at St George Hospital.

Alice is interested in a wide range of topics in Haematology, including:

Dr Brenton Seidl (Buderim, QLD)

Dr Brenton Seidl is a Medical Oncologist with fellowship in the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP).

Brenton graduated with Bachelor of Science with a focus on pharmacology in 2008 and completed medical school at the University of Queensland in 2012. He completed physician training at Mater Hospital Brisbane, and subsequently worked as an Advanced Trainee in Medical Oncology across several major hospitals throughout Queensland.

Brenton continues to maintain a focus on patient-centred care, education, and advocacy, which he takes with him to day-to-day clinical practice. He strongly believes that open, honest, and compassionate communication with patients and their families is essential to patient well-being and is committed to finding the best options and solutions for each patient he works with.

Brenton has experience in managing all solid organ malignancies, with a special interest in breast cancer, genitourinary cancers, melanoma, and lung cancer.

Medical Oncologist & Palliative Medicine Specialist - FRACP, FAChPM, ClinDipPallMed

Dr Padmini Menon is a Queensland and New South Wales trained Medical Oncologist; obtaining a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians after undertaking training in both Medical Oncology and Palliative Medicine. Dr Menon is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland School Of Medicine, and an Associate Lecturer with Griffith University. She is a member of the Medical Oncology Group of Australia.

Dr Menon is a member of the EVIQ Reference Committee, and is very involved in their activities including protocol developments for oncology and palliative care treatments. She has a keen interest in clinical trials and has been extensively involved in several trials during her training.

Dr Menon manages all tumour streams, however has a special interest in gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and head and neck cancers. She also has completed her training in Palliative Medicine and provides holistic cancer care to her patients.

Dr Fraser Wright is a Brisbane based Clinical and Laboratory Haematologist who is part of the Haematology Queensland (HQ) private practice group.

Dr Wright is combining his private practice with laboratory sessions at QML Pathology. He is passionate about reducing travel time for patients and providing top quality care close to home.  Fraser will be offering consultation sessions and in-hospital care at the Westside Private Hospital as well as outpatient consultations in Ipswich.

Dr Tzu-yang Wang is a Clinical & Laboratory Haematologist at Haematology Queensland (HQ).

Tzu-yang received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Honours at the University of Queensland in 2008 and completed specialist training at the Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital. He has also worked as a Staff Specialists at these institutions. He is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and The Royal College of Pathologist of Australasia.

Dr Kalokerinos’ training involved treating large numbers of patients in cancer units throughout Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast regions. Dr Shue is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) with specialist qualifications in Medical Oncology.

Following his graduation from Monash University in 1995, Dr Shue completed the majority of his Physicians Training at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane. He then completed his advanced training in Medical Oncology at the Royal Brisbane and Womens’, Princess Alexandra and Prince Charles Hospitals in Brisbane. On completion of his advanced training, Dr Shue joined the team at Sunshine Coast Haematology and Oncology Clinic, commencing full-time private practice in 2012.

Dr Shue has a strong focus on keeping up to date with the latest developments in oncology research and is currently a Principle Investigator for a number of his own clinical trials across multiple cancer types including skin cancer, melanoma, lung cancer and ovarian cancer.

Dr Shue is committed to providing the best possible care for each patient he works with by encouraging open communication, providing thorough consultations and collaborating with other health care clinicians to provide a holistic and multidisciplinary approach.

Dr Peter Davidson is a Consultant Haematologist. He trained in Brisbane at RBH/RCH/RWH complex, as well as Greenslopes Repatriation Hospital and Australian Red Cross Blood Service (ARCBS), and in 1996 gained specialist registration.

He is currently Head of Haematology at QML Pathology as well as VMO at Mater Hospitals Complex at South Brisbane, and VMO at ICON Cancer Clinics, and other Private Health Facilities on the Northside.

Dr Davidson has interests in haematology and immunology in particular diagnostic haematology, obstetric haematology, coagulation disorders, low grade haematologic disorders such as chronic cytopenias and myeloproliferative disorders, autoimmune haematologic problems, nutrition related anaemias and disorders of iron metabolism. He also has special interests in immune deficiencies and chronic fatigue.

He is a member of several organisations including Haematology Society of Australia & New Zealand, Australian & New Zealand Society of Blood Transfusion, Australasian Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis , Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, and Australasian College of Medical Nutrition.

Dr Raluca Fleser is a Clinical Haematologist with special interests in general haematology, pregnancy related haematological issues and diagnostic management of haematological malignancies with a focus on lymphoma and myeloma.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine in 1996, Raluca became a specialist in Internal Medicine before moving from Europe to Australia in 2002. Raluca then commenced post-graduate physician and specialist training in clinical and laboratory haematology at both the Mater and Princess Alexandra Hospitals.

Raluca consults and visits Greenslopes Private Hospital, Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital, North West Private Hospital, North Lakes Specialist Centre, and Caboolture Private Hospital.

Raluca ensures that each patient is provided with the upmost professional advice, treatment and personable service while in her care.

Dr Geoffrey Hawson is APHRA registered as a Medical Oncologist Clinical Haematologist and Palliative Care Physician. He has previously been Director of Haematology Oncology at TPCH, Director of Oncology and Palliative Care at Redcliffe Hospital and Director of Cancer Services at Nambour Hospital where he now works part time.

Lung Cancer and GI Cancer Preceptorships. He has a holistic approach to the care of patients with cancer and is an active promoter of mind body wellness, including the use of hypnosis for pain management and hot flushes in chemotherapy induced menopause. He is a full member of the Australian Society of Hypnosis and American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. He gave an invited plenary session on Mindfulness in Cancer at the Brisbane Cancer conference in December 2015.

He is planning to practice mainly with non-malignant haematology and is especially interested in early haemochromatosis counselling. He would like to offer hypnosis in patients with cancer to help with either symptom management or existential issues, without taking over their care from their primary medical provider. He is active in martial arts with a second Dan in Aikido and first Dan in Jodo.

He has joined North Lakes Haematology & Oncology Clinic and will be consulting one day per month.

Dr Sorab Shavaksha is a Clinical Haematologist in full-time private practice at SCHOC in Buderim on the Sunshine Coast since 2013.

Dr Kieron Bigby is a Medical Oncologist practicing in the Moreton Bay region. He has a clinical interest in general oncology covering multiple tumor streams, but with particular interests in gastrointestinal, lung, melanoma, breast, genitourinary and neuroendocrine cancers.

Since his appointment as a Staff Specialist at Redcliffe Hospital Cancer Care Services in 2011, Kieron has been involved as a local principle investigator of international clinical trials, a supervisor of oncology registrar trainees, and also coordinates oncology medical education for the hospital. He also undertakes extensive educational support and presentations for patients and other health professionals.

Dr Bigby aims to provide integrated cancer care servicing the local Moreton Bay District and surrounding regions, whilst always endeavouring to integrate the latest clinical data and therapies for his patients.
